Fraudulent Tax Refund Scam

On January 28th, the Eau Claire Police Department learned of a Fraudulent Tax Refund Scam that is being done over e-mail.

Citizens are contacted via e-mail and notified that they are to receive an additional tax refund from the IRS.

E-mails are from the following sender:  notice@irs.gov

Recipients are instructed to copy a web address and paste it into their web browser address. This will re-direct the recipient to a legitimate looking website that will ask for your Social Security Number and a Debit or Credit Card number to deposit the refund into.

This is NOT a legitimate website. The Eau Claire Police Department encourages you to delete this e-mail and not respond.

The Internal Revenue Service also wants to remind citizens that they never use e-mail to notify citizens of tax refunds.  If you get e-mail from what appears to be the I.R.S. or other government agency asking for personal financial information, do not reply and delete the message.

There is not need to contact Law Enforcement, just delete the message.
